Our Methodology

A culturally-grounded, evidence-based coaching framework built for Uganda's unique professional landscape.

"Coaching is unlocking a person's potential to maximise their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them." — Sir John Whitmore, adapted for the Ugandan professional context

The Open Meadow Approach

We believe that lasting professional transformation begins not with a formula, but with a genuine understanding of who you are, where you come from, and where you are called to go.

At Open Meadow Deck Consulting Ltd, our approach is built on the intersection of three powerful traditions. We draw on Western evidence-based coaching methodologies — aligned to the International Coaching Federation (ICF) core competencies — which provide rigorous, research-backed tools for goal-setting, behavioural change, and leadership development. These frameworks give our work a professional backbone grounded in global best practice.

We layer this with the deep wisdom of Ubuntu — the African philosophy that affirms "I am because we are." In the Ugandan professional context, individual growth cannot be separated from community, relationship, and collective responsibility. Our coaching honours these ties, helping clients thrive not just as individuals but as leaders embedded in families, teams, and communities. This cultural rootedness is not an addition; it is central to how we work.

Finally, we bring practical, on-the-ground understanding of Uganda's unique business environment — its market dynamics, its regulatory landscape, its generational mix of tradition and ambition. The result is a methodology that is globally credible, locally relevant, and deeply human.

Through guided conversation and structured reflection, we surface the limiting beliefs, unconscious assumptions, and untapped strengths that shape your professional behaviour. This exploration phase is where breakthroughs are seeded — often in the questions no one has ever asked you before.

Your Growth Roadmap

Coaching is not prescriptive — your growth plan is co-created with you, not for you. We design a practical, milestone-driven roadmap that reflects your unique context, resources, and timeline, giving you a clear and achievable path forward rooted in Ugandan realities.

Ownership is the bridge between insight and action. We build robust accountability structures that keep you moving — not through pressure, but through an internalized commitment to your own growth. This phase develops the self-leadership capacity that outlasts any coaching engagement.

Transformation happens not in sessions, but in the spaces between them. The Walk phase is about stepping boldly into your new behaviours, making real-world decisions, and returning to coaching with lived experience. We walk alongside you every step of the way as your changes take root.

"Six letters. One journey. A lifetime of growth — starting right here in Uganda."

Evidence-Based Models We Draw From

Our coaches do not follow a single school of thought. We draw flexibly from the world's most effective coaching models, always adapting their application to the Ugandan professional context.

Foundation Model

The GROW Model

Sir John Whitmore — Goal, Reality, Options, Will

The GROW Model remains one of the most widely applied frameworks in professional coaching worldwide. It provides a clear four-stage conversation structure: establishing the Goal, examining current Reality, generating Options, and committing to Will and action.

Applied in Uganda

We use GROW to anchor coaching sessions with structure while allowing ample space for cultural nuance, particularly in goal-definition where family, community, and spiritual dimensions are equally valid alongside career objectives.

Strength-Based

Solution-Focused Coaching

de Shazer & Berg — Strength-Based Approach

Solution-Focused Coaching shifts attention from problems to possibilities. Rather than dwelling on what is broken, it surfaces what is already working and amplifies those strengths. This forward-looking orientation creates rapid momentum and builds confidence.

Applied in Uganda

Particularly effective for Ugandan professionals who have navigated significant adversity — this model honours resilience and existing capability as the primary resources for growth, aligning with the African value of communal strength.

Story-Based

Narrative Coaching

David Drake — Using Personal Story for Transformation

Narrative Coaching works with the stories clients tell about themselves and their professional lives. By examining and reauthoring these stories, clients can shift limiting identities, reclaim agency, and step into more empowering professional narratives.

Applied in Uganda

East African oral traditions make narrative an exceptionally natural entry point. We use storytelling as a primary coaching medium, helping clients connect their professional growth to their family heritage, cultural identity, and personal calling.

Generative

Appreciative Inquiry

Cooperrider & Srivastva — Discover and Amplify What Works

Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a positive, generative approach that identifies the peak strengths and highest-potential moments in individuals and organisations, then uses these as building blocks for future growth. It replaces deficit thinking with possibility thinking.

Applied in Uganda

AI is transformative for team and organisational engagements across Kampala's diverse workplace cultures. By focusing on what Ugandan organisations do brilliantly, we catalyse motivation, pride, and collective vision far more effectively than problem-focused approaches.

Your journey begins with a complimentary, no-obligation conversation. We listen deeply to understand your current situation, your aspirations, and the challenges you are navigating. This is your opportunity to experience our coaching style first-hand and to determine whether Open Meadow Deck is the right partner for your growth. There is no sales pressure — only genuine conversation.

2

Intake Assessment

60–90 Minutes • Comprehensive Profiling

Once you choose to proceed, we conduct a thorough intake assessment covering your professional goals, personal values, communication style, and personality profile. We may use validated tools including strengths assessments and 360-degree feedback to build a rich, honest picture of who you are today. This depth of understanding is what makes our coaching so precise and effective.

3

Coaching Agreement

Co-Created • Mutual Accountability

We formalise your coaching engagement with a clear, co-created Coaching Agreement that defines your goals, the timeline, session frequency, and the accountability structures we will use together. This agreement is not a contract of compliance — it is a shared declaration of intention, ensuring that both coach and client are fully aligned and committed from the outset.

4

Coaching Sessions

60–90 Minutes • Regular Cadence

The heart of your engagement — regular, focused coaching sessions structured around the MEADOW GROW Framework. Sessions are conducted in Kampala (in-person) or via secure video call, depending on your preference. Each session builds on the last, moving you steadily through the MEADOW stages. Between sessions, you will receive tailored reflection exercises, reading recommendations, and action challenges designed to embed learning into your daily professional life.

5

Mid-Point Review

Midway Through Engagement • Course Correction

At the halfway point of your engagement, we conduct a structured review session to honestly assess your progress against the goals set in your Coaching Agreement. We celebrate real gains, examine what has been more challenging than expected, and — where necessary — recalibrate your roadmap to ensure the second half of your journey is even more productive than the first.

6

Completion & Integration

Final Session • Celebrating Growth

Your final session is a meaningful celebration of how far you have come. We review your transformation comprehensively — from intake to now — and consolidate the insights, strategies, and new habits you have developed. We co-create a personalised Integration Plan that ensures your growth continues long after formal coaching ends, equipping you with the self-coaching skills to sustain your own development independently.

7

Alumni Network

Ongoing • Community & Continued Support

Completing your engagement does not mean leaving the Open Meadow community. All clients are invited to join our alumni network — a curated community of Ugandan professionals who have walked the MEADOW journey. Members access quarterly masterclasses, peer coaching circles, an annual retreat, and priority access to new Open Meadow programmes. Growth, after all, is a lifelong conversation.

What Makes Us Different

In a growing coaching market, Open Meadow Deck stands apart through three core commitments that shape everything we do.

🌍

African Context First

We never import Western coaching wholesale and apply it without adaptation. Every technique, every model, and every conversation is filtered through deep knowledge of Uganda's cultural values, workplace norms, and communal leadership traditions. You will never feel like a test case for someone else's framework.

🗣️

Bilingual Capable

Our coaches are fluent in both English and Luganda, Uganda's most widely spoken local language. For many professionals, the deepest insights and most authentic self-expression emerge in their mother tongue. We offer fully bilingual coaching sessions where language becomes a bridge to clarity, not a barrier to it.

📊

Measurable Outcomes

We are committed to evidence of impact, not just client satisfaction. From intake to completion, we use validated measurement tools, structured progress reviews, and qualitative outcome mapping to demonstrate concrete, observable change. Your investment in coaching should show up in your career, your leadership, and your life — and we track that rigorously.

Certifications & Professional Standards

Our commitment to professional excellence is underpinned by internationally recognised standards, ethical frameworks, and ongoing quality assurance — so you can engage with complete confidence.

🏅

ICF Code of Ethics

All Open Meadow Deck coaches adhere strictly to the International Coaching Federation (ICF) Code of Ethics. This comprehensive ethical framework governs confidentiality, conflict of interest, professional boundaries, and client welfare — ensuring every coaching relationship is safe, trustworthy, and professionally conducted to the highest global standard.

🔒

GDPR-Compliant Data Handling

Client information is precious. We handle all personal and professional data in compliance with GDPR principles — including lawful processing, data minimisation, secure storage, and the right to erasure. Client session notes, assessment results, and personal disclosures are treated with absolute discretion and stored securely at all times.

🧠

Supervision-Supported Coaching

Every Open Meadow coach participates in regular professional supervision — a hallmark of elite coaching practice that ensures our coaches are continuously reflecting on their own effectiveness, bias, and wellbeing. Supervision protects both the coach and the client, maintaining the quality and ethical integrity of every engagement we deliver.
